Building Blocks

I can’t tell you how much I enjoy working with Quiltmaker Magazine.  The 100 Blocks issues are truly wonderful to be able to contribute to.  The Blog Tour for Volume 9 runs Today through May 2nd. The 100 Blocks Volume 9 will be on most newsstands May 6.  It is another great issue!

My block is called “Building Blocks” and is a super simple block that has lots of design possibilities.  The fabric  used is Vintage Play by Susan Marth for Red Rooster Fabrics.

To make this table runner, just make two blocks and two extra 3″ x 6″ flying Geese and four 3″ x 3″ cornerstones.  Add a border if you want a bigger runner, or just bind it for a 12-1/2″ x 30-1/2″ runner.

This is the quilt that I made for the Gallery – you can see it in the magazine or if you go to Golden, Co, you can see it in person!  I rotated the blocks in each row and added sashing with a Flying Goose unit to complete each block.

Now for the good part!  There is a magazine giveaway with this blog post!  TWO magazines plus one each of my new patterns to be released at Spring Market in Pittsburgh on May 15th.  The new patterns are Barn Dance, London Star and Tinsel Time (a book!).

All you have to do to be entered is comment on this blog post and tell me how long you have been quilting and why you love it.

Twelve years and counting! What I love is discovering things like this — a great block that is deceptively simple but packs a great visual punch when repeated. That’s why these issues are so great!

  8. Donna Joy says:

Now you have made me think about how long I have been quilting. Must be 40 years, my grandmother was the one to get me started. She would buy all the quilting books and we would spend hours looking through them.

Been quilting for 3 years and regularly (as in daily) for 6 months. Always enjoyed sewing but found that quilting upped the creativity factor by at least 1000 percent! Made 6 quilts in 6 mos. for 6 grandchildren. Found quilting cheap therapy after layoff LOL! Congrats on being published in Vol. 9 and thanks for the opportunity to win.

I’ve only been quilting about a year. Unfortunately, I didn’t start quilting until about a year after my mother passed away. I feel a kinship when I quilt, to both my mother and all those who passed before her. My older sister and I are both quilting now, so it is also something we share.

  16. Judy Currie says:

I have been quilting since 1985. I love to see the quilt appearing under my hands. Thanks.

  17. monica sisk says:

Let’s see, I have been quilting regularly for about 6 years, though I learned to quilt when I was about 12 and my great grandmother taught me to make 4 patches. I helped her hand quilt regularly on her enormous hanging quilt frame.

I don’t know why I love it really, the nostalgia, the gratification of making something “new”, the creative outlet, the history of the art, the connection to family tradition, all of these are reasons I love it.

  18. Darlene says:

I have been quilting for about 25 years and enjoy piecing and take breaks in between to learn paper-piecing and hand applique. The best part is looking at a finished quilt and saying ” Yes, I like that!”

I enjoy the creative exercise of making something unique that will be used and loved by someone, maybe even a stranger. Thanks for contributing to this great collection, I really like your block and the ideas you have for using it!
